Shrimp farming is a vital part of the coastal architecture. This can earn you profit as shrimp has quite a great value in the market. It suits well in all kinds of cuisine and is a real delicacy. Shrimp Farming: Choosing the Location

To set up the farm 1st you need to select the location. It should be a place connected by road, must have a good pollution free water supply of both sweet and brackish water. Mangrove areas with large tree stumps should be avoided. It should be a sloppy and flood free land. The social problems of the locality should be taken care of and infrastructural facilities like electricity, ice factory, cold storage and means of communication should be available.

Shrimp Farming: Setting Up the  Shrimp Farm

The farm should be set up on an area of 0.4-0.5 ha and extensive earthwork like top soil stripping, leveling of pond bottom etc should be done before farming. The farm must be equipped with ponds, water intake structure, store room for feed and equipments, area for cleaning the harvest, watch and ward room, office and a mini laboratory.

Shrimp Farming: Things to take care of

The height of water level of the pond will depend on free board, wave action and shrinkage factor. Gates must be present to control the inflow and outflow of the water. Another important part is the drain canal. After this is done the pond should be prepared well to remove harmful plants and weeds, eliminate obnoxious gases and improve the ecosystem of the prawns.

Shrimp Farming: Feeding the Shrimps

The feeding of the shrimps should be supplementary or complete depending on the farm. They are fed by automatic feed dispensers or by broadcasting all over the pond.

Another vital task is harvesting of shrimps. It is done by bag net and hand picking. In 150-165 days the prawns will grow 25-30 gm depending on species. They are stored in layers of crushed ice before transporting to the market.
